Embracing the Economic Downturn
A September 2008 article in the Wall Street Journal stated that "22 percent of consumers said that economy-related woes were causing them to go to the doctor less often." In response, Jameson developed a list of basic safeguards for dental practices.

The story reveals that Sageworks, a firm that tracks private-company financial performance, found that dental offices had higher profit margins than any other industry in 2008. With average profit margins at 17%, dentistry outpaced accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll services, legal services and mining support services among the top five performing professions in '08. Dental margins rose about 1.5% from 2007 according to the study.
In a nutshell, the idea is that these increases can be attributed to three patient behaviors: 1) skipping cleanings and other dental maintenance in order to save a few bucks eventually lead to achy teeth and more expensive procedures such as root canals; 2) maximizing dental benefits while they are available and 3) continuing to take care of themselves (including cosmetic dentistry) as an investment in themelves rather than losing their money in the market.
